Here is why our health insurance costs so much. I’m a bit sickened by it. Friends will recall that I took my 14 yr old son to an emergency room in early June after a rough U15 travel soccer match. He complained of pain when breathing and we thought he might have cracked a rib, punctured a lung, etc. Who knew? So we go to the emergency room because it’s Sunday. And it turns out that its simply a bruise. After a visit from a Physicians Assistant (very nice), and a trip to radiology for the x-ray. All good. Paid our $75 copay and went home happy.
Today in the mail, an invoice for $320 arrives from the group that bills for the “Doctor”, and it shows that amount as a balance due. I go to my insurance carriers website, and look up the claim, and I find that it’s been paid. Guess what else I find?
A claim by Vassar Brothers Hospital for over $850.00! Also paid, thankfully.
But really? For what? The visit, all in, cost the insurance company over $1,000.
I just don’t get it. Total productive time (not waiting) was about 15 minutes. That’s an hourly equivalent of something close to $4,000 hour. I just threw up in my mouth.
